THE SWINGING SIXTIES PARTY OF YOUR DREAMS

Let 1960s icon Emma Peel guide you into the hedonism of Swinging London, when Britain led the world in fashion, art, music and fun, when the rich and stylish jetted to beach resorts, drove sportscars over Swiss mountains and sailed yachts into St Tropez.

When the thrill of the Cold War merged with psychedelia to produce ironic action heroes like James Bond and The Prisoner, forever in surreal peril from spies, megalomaniacs and a corrupt establishment.

When Jane Fonda played Barbarella, the spacesuited sex kitten on a cosmic acid trip, and Michael Caine played working-class hardmen made good, doing dirty jobs in immaculate suits from the latest tailor-to-the-stars.

No one sums up the verve of the era more than Mrs Emma Peel, the catsuited, karate-chopping amateur agent played by Diana Rigg in The Avengers, foiling plots by eccentric villains in country houses, on giant chess boards and in secret laboratories, while trading flirtatious quips with her partner, the bowler-hatted gentleman spy John Steed.

Who knows who you’ll meet there? Rock stars, playboy shipping magnates, edgy fashion designers, self-creating dandies, out-there conceptual artists, all brimming with playful confidence and determination to live the High Life.

MRS PEEL vs BARBARELLA

Saturday 30th April

8pm–2am

The Eight Club, 1 Dysart Street, London EC2A 2BX (Old Street, Shoreditch High Street, Liverpool Street and Moorgate stations)

Tickets: £15 earlybird, £20 full price from www.mrspeels.club

Mrs Peel’s, the Swinging Sixties party inspired by Emma Peel, catsuited heroine of stylish 1960s TV show The Avengers, invites you to a special party with a cosmic twist—pitching the aristocratic whimsy and British cool of Mrs Peel, and her bowler-hatted partner John Steed, against the playful space-fantasy eroticism of Barbarella. Who will gain the upper hand? You decide!

Based on a comic strip, 1968 movie Barbarella starred Jane Fonda as an innocently sexual, space-travelling agent with an endless supply of glamorously impractical costumes, in a plot involving dangerous clockwork dolls, a blind angel, whip-wielding leather robots, a machine that kills through orgasm and a city built on a pool of liquid evil called the Mathmos. The Mathmos lighting company took their name from the movie and we’ll be giving away one of their famous “lava lamps” on the night.

Our party is in a penthouse club — when you arrive, take the glass elevator to the top floor where open terraces offer views over the city.
• Compere and lounge legend Count Indigo
• Live music from The Court of St James, including psychedelic hits from the Barbarella soundtrack
• Sci-fi burlesque from fembot pleasure machine Cherry Shakewell
• DJ sets from lounge disco god Martin Green
• Prize of a Mathmos heritage lava lamp for the best costume
• Mind-altering light effects and projections from the Barbarella movie
• Cocktails
• Awesome views from our rooftop terraces

The Swinging Sixties boat party of your dreams!

Inspired by Emma Peel, the catsuited, karate-chopping heroine of surreal and stylish 1960s TV show The Avengers, Mrs Peel’s is a celebration of London’s most cool, creative, confident and playful decade. This time we present a special summer boat party, travelling up and down the Thames. Enjoy a free gin and tonic courtesy of SW4 gin as you wait to embark (we leave at 8pm sharp!) then imagine you’re sunbathing on the deck of a yacht in St Tropez as the psychedelic party swirls around you.

Your host Count Indigo will give a live performance with his new lounge groove trio, and there will be freakbeat and movie soundtrack DJing from the Psychedelic Milkman, go-go dancing from our specially created troupe Catsuit A-Go-Go, Bardot-esque burlesque from Trixie Malicious, displays of nautical masculinity from tongue-in-cheek dance team The Action Men, mind-expanding lighting effects and more. There is an optional barbecue meal available as well.
