We are a creative glass studio, determined to make.
Michael Ruh Studio is a combined partnership of creativity and determination between designer/glassmakers Michael Ruh and Natascha Wahl. Foremost we are makers. We make handmade glass, tableware, vases and lighting of exquisite beauty of our own design. We speak the unequivocal language of colour, texture and light; this is the language of glass for us.
We listen, look, then make.
Michael Ruh and Natascha Wahl met each other in a Belgian glassblowing studio in 1995. It was at this chance meeting when their studio, and lives together began.
As novice glass makers, they both knew they needed more practical experience, and each found jobs as glass making assistants at different glass studios in London.
In 1999, they were ready to set off on their own. The first years of their studio were not spent in a fixed place. Michael and Natascha hired production time in various studios to make their work. Venues and Accommodation as varied and far reaching as camping and working in Sunderland, or commuting from home in London to the far reaches of Essex, or a six month sojourn in Norway enabled them to work and build their clientele. For a number of years they resided temporarily in upstate New York over the summer to make glass before setting off in their second hand van, named Woody the Creampuff, to sell their work at numerous art festivals in the U.S.
They drove from coast to coast, crossing high mountains, desolate and deserted plains, or the lush deltas of the Mississippi. Often they slept, squished in the car on roadway lay-bys, or awakened to the blue-silvery view west over the waters of the central coast of California. The beauty of the rusted industrial landscapes of Ohio revealed by the bright light after a thunderstorm were noted as “things to remember”. All the while, they collected memories of the muted and ephemeral midwestern sunsets, or the patterns and colours of the harvest of the Dakotas. Western sunsets and landscapes serve the inspiration of much of Michael’s colour choices.
After a number of years on the road, they decided it was time to set up near to home. They melted glass for the first time in their own studio in April 2004.
