Sculptor and designer Julian Sainsbury is recognised for his collection of exquisite Kitchenware, Serveware and Tableware. His designs are known for their pared-back aesthetic, neutral palette and finely judged simplicity. His pestle and mortars, mixing and serving bowls and tableware range are all now considered kitchen staples for the discerning shopper.
Julian set up John Julian (then John Julian Design) fifteen years ago with an exhibition at the renowned EGG shop in Knightsbridge, London. His distinctive design style is utilitarian with a classical influence – resulting in a purity derived from functionality. He is often featured in the press and his products such as the Ball Handled Pestle & Mortar are regularly used by chefs including Nigel Slater.
In 2013, frustrated by the restrictions of other manufacturers, he set up his own workshop in Wiltshire. Here he uses traditional methods, in particular a hand jolley, which allows him to inject more character into each piece. Today a small team work closely with him to produce the range and everything is created and fired in the Wiltshire workshop. In a recent feature in The World of Interiors Ruth Guilding praised his commitment to keeping “the art in artisan” and “combining a sculptor’s eye with the traditional methods of producing ceramics”.
